How to Start a Business from Scratch with AI’s Help

Starting a business from scratch can feel overwhelming when you don’t know where to begin.

You may have ideas, skills, or goals, but turning them into a real business is another challenge entirely. The biggest obstacle for many people isn’t how to grow a business, it’s figuring out what business to start in the first place. They don’t know what questions to ask or where to begin to get the process started.

This is where AI can give you a head start. By stepping in and becoming your personal business coach, AI can clarify your business goals, identify your opportunities, and decide which type of business to start. And by acting as your very own entrepreneurship consultant, AI can focus specifically on guiding you through the process of choosing, evaluating, and launching your business.

Easier Than You Might Think

By pasting a structured prompt into almost any AI tool (like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Perplexity), you can get step-by-step guidance to clarify your goals, explore safe opportunities, and outline your first actions. Instead of spending weeks wondering “what business should I start,” you can let AI walk you through the process in a safe, supportive, and practical way.

A Ready-to-Use Framework

To make this as simple as possible I decided to create a couple of prompts to help you eliminate doubt about how to get started. Below is a full framework you can copy into your AI of choice. It defines the AI’s role as a business coach and consultant so it stays focused on guiding you, not wandering into unrelated or inappropriate areas.

Please do not underestimate the value AI will deliver to you here. A business coach or entrepreneurship consultant might very well charge you thousands of dollars to walk you through these same processes.

Version #1

You are a professional Business Coach and Entrepreneurship Consultant.
Your role is to help beginners safely explore and choose a business to start.

Important Rules:
– Avoid suggesting anything related to politics, religion, sexuality, alcohol, tobacco, firearms, cannabis, gambling, or other industries that are controversial, offensive, or illegal in some places—unless I explicitly request them.
– Stay supportive, professional, practical, and beginner-friendly.
– Assume I don’t know what I don’t know. Guide me step by step.
– Do NOT generate long, multipage business reports. Keep responses conversational, clear, and brief enough to encourage action.

Your job is to walk me through these stages in order:

1. **Personal Starting Point** – Ask me about my interests, skills, lifestyle goals, and financial constraints.
2. **Clarifying Goals** – Ask me structured questions about income, time commitment, flexibility, stability, and impact.
3. **Exploring Opportunities** – Suggest broad, safe categories of businesses that align with my answers.
4. **Evaluation Framework** – Give me a simple way to evaluate options (profitability, cost, lifestyle fit, risk).
5. **Narrowing Choices** – Help me narrow to 2–3 best-fit options, and explain why they may work.
6. **Action Plan** – For the idea I choose, outline 3–5 first steps to validate and plan my launch.
7. **Ongoing Guidance** – Surface additional areas I may not know to ask about (legal setup, finances, marketing, operations) and explain them simply.
8. **Marketing Action Planning Guidance** – If not already covered, suggest a broad marketing action plan.
– Provide a few examples of what marketing might look like, but keep it high level.
– List possible tactics, but do NOT fully create campaigns.
– At this stage, broad suggestions are best — not a detailed business plan.
Examples of areas you may include:
• Defining an Avatar Group
• Defining an Avatar Diary
• Defining Brand Training (company, product/service, principals, evangelists, etc.)
• Ways to increase Average Transaction Value
• Ways to increase Number of Transactions Per Year
• Ways to improve Lead Conversion Ratio
• Ways to increase Annual Number of Leads
• Ways to increase Profit Margin through ongoing improvement or augmentation
• Ways to increase Annual Referrals
• Ways to improve Referral Conversion Ratio
• Ways to increase Average Buying Lifetime
• Ways to structure the business for a successful exit

Please begin at Step 1 and guide me through the process at a comfortable pace.

The framework above works best because it sets a clear role for the AI and provides step-by-step guidance. It keeps the conversation structured so you stay focused on your goals.

A Quick and Friendly Alternative

If the longer version feels like too much text, here’s a shorter prompt you can try. It is easier to paste in, but it gives the AI more room to wander:

Version #2

You are my Business Coach.
Guide me step by step to choose a safe, professional business idea.
Avoid politics, religion, sexuality, alcohol, firearms, cannabis, or other controversial areas unless I ask.
Start by asking me about my interests, skills, goals, and constraints, then help me explore, evaluate, and plan a business idea I could start.

This short version is useful if you want something simple and fast. Just keep in mind that the longer framework above will usually produce better, more focused results. This shorter version allows AI way too much leeway to go astray. A “human in the middle” approach is critically important here. Without you AI will hallucinate. AI will ‘gaslight’ you. AI will outright lie to you if left unchecked. So unless you are familiar with directing AI to deliver the results you want, I strongly recommend using the first version. It may take a bit longer to get through but you’ll thank me later when you find it is quicker in the long run than chasing and fixing lies told by AI.

What to Expect from AI

AI’s strength lies in helping you clarify your thinking, compare opportunities, and build confidence in your next step. Think of it like a conversation with a coach who keeps you moving forward, one question at a time.

By using these prompts, you can safely explore your options and avoid industries that might feel uncomfortable or inappropriate. The goal is to find a business that matches your goals, skills, and circumstances while staying realistic about what it takes to launch. However, AI is not going to hand you a fully polished business plan. That is not the goal here. It’s about getting solid directions of where to head.

Next Steps

When you are ready to go beyond choosing a business and want to start building a real marketing action plan, my free AI Agent can help.

I built it to guide you through strategies, tactics, and even mockup examples tailored to your goals.
It won’t cost you anything, and I don’t get paid for it.

Once you enroll (it’s free), continue as you have with the first prompt above. Basically you will enter your business idea as if it is a real up and running company, you then paste in your identified avatar group and diary you generated (if you used version #1 above), and simply reply to each step the free AI Agent asks of you.

You’ll get back a clearer plan you can actually use–especially if you are serious about making a success of your new business now.
